Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in type 2 diabetes. Metformin is used widely as first-line therapy and may have cardiovascular benefits, but if patients can’t tolerate metformin or don’t achieve adequate glycemic control with it, there’s no consensus about second-line treatment.
For most children and adults with type 1 diabetes, day-to-day disease management remains difficult despite improvements in insulin formulations and delivery and advancements in diabetes technologies during the past decade.Only 17% of children and 21% of adults with type 1 diabetes meet HbA1c targets outlined in American Diabetes Association guidelines.
