Chronic kidney disease (CKD) can be defined as a sustained damage of the renal parenchyma leading to chronic deterioration of renal function that may gradually progress to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). ESRD remains uniformly fatal without renal replacement therapy (dialysis or kidney transplantation). The term CKD acknowledges that this condition exists on a continuum with differing degrees of renal impairment rather than a discrete state of renal insult (acute kidney injury). The term CKD has replaced previously used terms chronic renal insufficiency and chronic renal failure
